2022 Year In Review

2022 Year In Review

2022 was supposed to be "a return to normal" in the wake of the Covid years, and yet I found I spent much of the year trying to figure out exactly what that looked like, and feeling like I was floundering in much of my life, business and creative practice.

In January, I took on a part time job as a Virtual Assistant. With the kids getting older, it felt like time to put my English and Graphic design degrees back to work (although of course I use these skills for Midnight Creative).  Finding balance between Midnight Creative, my family and this new job took more than a few months.

I feel like the world is always telling us to find our passion and "quit our day day jobs," and I couldn't help feeling like I was taking a step back. But wanna know something? It was actually liberating to let go of some the pressure for Midnight Creative to hit certain financial goals.

I also began work on my larger "Uncle Ernest's Farm" rug in 2022. This process allowed me to do something I really love, which is share how to make rugs with you! I was always that kid who couldn't wait to come home from school and share what I'd learned and loved from my day. Sharing this process felt a lot like that! Hearing from some of you that it gave you the confidence to start making larger projects, makes me so truly happy.

My greatest challenge with this project was time. I felt like I didn't have enough time, that I didn't want to spend the time at the end of a busy day to prioritize this project, that it was taking to long. I felt embarrassed that I wasn't making more progress each month (especially when comparing my creative output to others on instagram).

Even now, I'm tempted to list all the things I was busy doing instead of punching faster and more regularly. But I'm not going to do that. It's not a race; it's a process. I'm me, not them.

Here are a few other projects from 2022:

Of course, one of the best parts of 2022 was our trip to the East Coast of Canada. We were able to visit three maritime provinces - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island on our two week road trip that began in Halifax. Spending quality time as a family and exploring a truly spectacular part of our country that we hadn't visited before was the highlight of my year.

And lastly, 2022 ends with a completed project.

I have so many ideas for 2023, an exciting announcement in late January/ early February and possibly another adventure or two as well.

Cheers to you and a Very Happy New Year!

XOXO ~ Katie
