This Pelican Fraktur is the first in a series of three Pennsylvania Dutch bird fraktur mats. Inspired by block prints, the limited colour palette may seem simple, but the final design is rich and sophisticated.
This stylized pelican is often found in Pennsylvania Dutch designs. Notice it's beak reaching toward its breast? Shown with their young, they are thought to symbolize sacrifice - as they're believed to feed their chicks with blood from their own breast when food is scarce.
Create this intermediate project with your No. 10 Regular Oxford Punch Needle, or rug hook of your choice.
The finished project measures 11"x16" and includes the pattern drawn on mon'ks cloth, Canadian 4-ply rug yarn (the green is hand-dyed), and a colour guide. These kits are packaged in a simple cloth bag.
The monks cloth edge is serged and the cloth measures approximately 24"x24" to accommodate your rug hooking frame.
**Materials needed, but NOT included, to complete this project:
• No. 10 Regular Oxford Punch Needle, or other punch needle or rug hook that makes approximately 1/4 inch loops.
